This optional day is kindly being led by Graham Pyatt and Scott Wilson, who will conduct guided visits to Dawyck Botanical Gardens, and Glentress Forest, both near Peebles. Dawyck is an outstation of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, where fine specimens of many introduced conifers can be seen along the David Douglas Trail. Scotland plants a beetle battling tree in Central Park
Date : Friday, April 5, 2002 at 1.00 p.m.
Location : Merchants Gate, Central Park - enter the Park at Columbus Circle and Central Park South, next to the Maine Monument.
Event and photo opportunity : Sounds of Drums and Bagpipes will echo through Central Park as Parks First Deputy Commissioner joins First Minister of Scotland Jack McConnell, Royal Scottish Forestry Society Vice President James Brown, and Central Park Conservancy President Regina Peruggi to dedicate a newly planted Red Oak tree in the park.
Details : Parks and the Central Park Conservancy welcome Central Park's newest tree: a Red Oak. The tree, donated by the Royal Scottish Forestry Society, will serve as a living memorial to the September 11 attacks and as a symbol of hope from the people of Scotland to the people of New York. In light of the city's Asian Longhorned beetle infestation, the Society chose to plant a Red Oak tree, which is not a host to the beetle.
Attending the dedication on behalf of Scotland will be First Minister of Scotland Jack McConnell, who is Scotland's highest political official. He will be accompanied by Royal Scottish Forestry Society Vice President James Brown. The 148-year-old learned society, with over 1000 members worldwide, promotes healthy practices in all aspects of forestry and arboriculture.
In February two trees infected by the Asian Longhorned beetle were discovered in the Central Park in an area close to where this new Red Oak will now grow.
This tree planting will take place the day before Tartan Day, a holiday commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, or the Scottish Declaration of Independence. The documents were used by America's founders as they drafted the American Declaration of Independence.
